Movember
Posted on November 8, 2024
It’s that time of year again – Movember is here! This November, we’re challenging all of our team members, partners, and friends across the construction industry to join us in raising awareness for men’s health. Together, let’s build stronger, healthier lives and encourage each other to tackle some of the most pressing health issues men face such as Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, Prostate Cancer and Testicular Cancer.
We all have partners, fathers, brothers, sons, and mates that we love. When these men are well, the benefits ripple through relationships, families, and communities. But when these men are unwell and unsupported, we all feel it.
Too many men are dying too young, largely from preventable causes. Help-seeking can feel foreign, so many men kick the can down the road. When they do seek assistance, they often don’t get the support they need. And this puts enormous pressure on the families and communities who care for men. It means we’ve got so many reasons to care about men’s health.
In the spirit of Movember, we’re shining a light on three major health issues impacting men, especially those in high-stress, physically demanding fields like construction:
Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
The construction industry has one of the highest rates of suicide, largely due to high stress, long hours, and physically exhausting work conditions. Mental health challenges affect workers on every level.
Encourage open conversations about mental health on-site and off. Let’s break down stigmas by letting workers know it’s okay to seek help and talk about what’s on their mind. Promote resources like mental health support hotlines, and ensure every worker knows where they can turn for help.
Prostate Cancer Awareness
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, and regular screenings are key to early detection and successful treatment.
Encourage men over 40 to have open conversations with their doctors about prostate health. A simple, quick screening can make all the difference. Consider partnering with local health clinics to provide on-site awareness and check-ups to make screenings more accessible for operatives.
World Pancreatic Cancer Day is Thursday the 21st November. Consider communicating this to men on site via a Toolbox Talk throughout the month of November.
Testicular Cancer Awareness
Testicular cancer typically affects younger men (ages 15-40) and is highly treatable when detected early. Educating our teams is key to early detection.
Sharing resources on self-exams and holding an awareness session or sharing instructional resources that workers can access privately is a small step can lead to potentially lifesaving results.
Ways to Support Movember on Site
Grow the Mo: Growing a moustache is the classic Movember challenge. If you’re in, join others on your team in embracing the stubble for a cause! Whether it’s a full-on handlebar or some modest scruff, each “Mo” sparks conversation.
Host a Fundraiser: Set up a friendly competition between crews or offices to raise funds. Think “Best Beard” contest or team challenges – all proceeds go to supporting men’s health programs through the Movember Foundation.
Participate in the 60km Challenge: This challenge encourages people to walk or run 60 kilometres in November – one for every man lost to suicide each hour worldwide. It’s a simple, powerful way to take action and get moving, even on busy workdays.
Movember is about more than just a moustache. It’s a movement aimed at improving men’s health and creating lasting change. In the construction industry, where physical and mental demands are high, prioritising health is crucial. Together, we can foster an environment where team members feel supported and encouraged to look after themselves and each other.
Thank you for your hard work and commitment. Let’s make Movember count – on and off the job site!
